Met Wim Crouwel
It was late evening close to the Regents Park Street I saw standing a small group of people. Adversely talk about the typography and design – so I though I’m on the right place.

Main entrance to The Royal College of Physicians was occupied by typographers and designers from all over the UK including Vojta (PXS) with obvious word “kde séš” something like “where are you”.
International Society
of Typographic Design
presents lecture of
Wim Crouwel
First presentation was more less a personal review and interpretation of Hamish Muir and his close collaboration with Wim Crouwel. Little bit of rumbling on he beginning was slightly confusing for me – but almost everyone enjoyed presentation of process inspired by client with absolute freedom for designer.

presentation
Mr Gridnik start the presentation with his first poster he did at the university – actually there was no grid at all. It was more drawing exercise for his school, rather than poster as he said recently. Affected by Robert Mayer he start to construct first layout based on the typeface which was beginning of his successful carer.

Apart from his extraordinary and emotionally tuned presentation we received the message – between the lines. Flexible approach he applied in all of his work was endorsed by systematic process. Simple elements and clean typography based on the grid was key of all his successful communication. Sort message for all of us which evoke – clean communication design.
Each of this work is unique and admirable even you don’t know the story and the association how does this graphics composition arise. All the more was interesting to hear proper work flow and association of thinking and making the artworks such as hiroshima, line of catalogs for “Stedelijk Museum Catalogue, Amsterdam” typography experiments and so on. Here is no space to go through all his work and repeat all his little stories. You can follow his group at Flickr – Wim Crouwel and also you can find all his books at you work for them. For sure you’ll find another sources that I probably don’t know.
would be great to share …
It was really inspiring to see and hear someone who you know as a typographic icon in natural – see this incredible presentation live

questions
After his presentation was a brief questionnaire which follows what he basically said in his presentation. Interested things was enjoying his director career at the Museum. I’ve always thought that creative people have to do just creative work and it’s not true.

library discussion
Part of this evening was open discussion between the members and other typographers.
