J. Zeldman is a very established figure in the web design community, and achieves top position on the list when it comes to practical web designers.
Recently interviewed for Gain: AIGA Business and Design Conference he quotes ..

“Good graphic design is not the same as good user experience design, he explains. In fact, “good web design is invisible”—it feels simple and authentic because it’s about the character of the content, not the character of the designer.”

In principal it seems we don’t spend much time understanding how the application works, but we do discuss how people think, and especially how they behave when using websites, touch screens, mobile devices, TV or evan a cash point machine.
